Chamonix central is overflowing with terrific places to eat, so we’re focussing here on our 5 ‘family favourite’ casual restaurants and ‘fast food’ places in the town.
Monkey – featuring ‘Mexican street food’, live music and a bar, with dinner all evenings, and brunch/lunch Wednesday to Sunday. Bonus, they serve local Moody coffee when Moody is shut roasting their beans on weekends. Tacos are a favourite, with ‘comida’ (sharing plates), burgers and burritos completing the lunch/dinner menu. When we’re not skiing, we race down for Sunday brunch, where huevos rancheros, breakfast burritos and open toasts with gourmet toppings make everyone happy. Though there is lots of outdoor seating, and some inside, we suggest calling to book a table. Sports from the UK and elsewhere often on the screens. In the courtyard near Aiguille du Midi. http://monkeychamonix.com
Cool Cats – is an artisanal hot dog bar based in a shack by the river in the centre of town, open daily for lunch and dinner from 12:00 to late. They serve up standards and specials, focused on – you guessed it – hot dogs, but with a few delicious veggie, vegan and non-dog alternatives. Swing by from midday, order inside, take a seat outside, throw a blanket over your lap if it’s cold, and they will bring your delicious food to you. We recommend the Mexican dog, nachos, sweet potato and avocado tartine… but suspect you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu! Details, open hours, menu here – call to book or just swing by and wait for a table to free up: http://coolcatsrestaurants.com
Cafe Bluebird – open for breakfast and brunch 8-3pm each day. Super value breakfast favourites for hungry adventurers – our favourite on the menu is their ‘breakfast burrito’ frequently enjoyed at lunch time. Egg, bacon or sausage, potato rosti , cheese, tomato wrapped up tight. There are other things on the menu, but these stand out. Small amount of inside and undercover seating. Conveniently located near Aiguille du Midi http://www.bluebirdchamonix.com
Burger and Wells – open from 10:30am until late daily, is a tastier alternative to run-of-the-mill burger joints like McDonald’s down the road. Lots of organic, local and vegan options – including burgers, wraps and salads. While there is a good range of smoothies and other drinks, the free water caught our attention, with both still and sparkling on tap! Minutes from the Chamonix train station, stop by to eat in or take away, your body and the planet will be happier for it.https://www.burgerandwells.com
Sushi Shop Chamonix – If you’re up for some Japanese, Sushi Shop provides a refreshing change to the richness of French food, burgers and Mexican. Open every day for lunch and dinner (closed from 3-6pm) it has the option to eat-in upstairs, or take away. While a chain in several countries, it’s a classy one, so the food isn’t inexpensive, but is consistently excellent – every piece and dish is made with care. Explore the available options via the store’s website or app, you can order online and collect, have your meal made to order on the spot, or select from the pre-made options in the refrigerator.
