No matter when you arrive in Argentière, chances are you will need to collect some groceries from the supermarket either on your way to apartment One Le Savoy or the next day. Here we give an overview of some supermarket options in Argentière and Chamonix.
It’s not uncommon for stores in France, including supermarkets, to close their doors on a Sundays, due to a law that dates over 100 years. That said, in tourist-friendly areas like Chamonix, particularly during peak times, some shops have provisions to be open, or to at least open for some of the day. But many of them also have days or half days when they are closed which are good to know about before You turn up and find the door closed!
If you arrive late on a Saturday or during a Sunday, this might unsettle your self-catering plans, so below we summarise some important things to note and plan around.
But if you are needing to shop on a Sunday afternoon for a little more than the basics, there are a few options to consider in Argentière and nearby in Chamonix. It’s not a comprehensive list, but will have you covered every day of the week.

Groceries In Argentière

Epicerie Le Raccard, the organic deli in Argentiere, is also open on Sunday morning and late afternoon (usually 08:30-12:00, 16:30-19:00 every day – note it is closed early afternoon). https://www.facebook.com/haroldchx/
Supermarkets in Chamonix
Le Petit Casino– while little, it has plenty to meet your needs and is open throughout the weekend. Open 08:00 – 20:00 every day (including Sunday) except Tuesday, and can be found set back from the main pedestrian mall in Chamonix at 199, Rue du Docteur Paccard, 74400 Chamonix-Mont-Blanc. https://magasins.lepetitcasino.com/fr/s/casino-shop-chamonix-mont-blanc. There is a paid parking lot behind the supermarket, Parking de l’Outa.
There is another Petit Casino in Chamonix near Aiguille du Midi train station at 73, Rue Ravanel Le Rouge, 74400 Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, which purports to be open every day, however closes early afternoon for 2 hours.
Spar, Chamonix Sud – Recently renovated, located near Aiguille du Midi tucked away in the apartment block courtyard, and open 7 days per week until 20:00. It’s a bright, well stocked supermarket and from what we can tell, has the best opening hours of the area. Super U, Chamonix Central – this is the bigger sibling to the MarcheU in Argentière. Located in the main pedestrian area of Chamonix, it boasts a larger grocery, fruit and vegetable, and fresh fish, meat and deli on the street level. Hidden down the escalator (near the fruit and vegetables) is a homewares, entertainment, toys, books, stationery and clothing section. It keeps the same hours as MarcheU, open every day but closer Sunday afternoons.
Carrefour, Chamonix– this is the large stand alone supermarket you will likely see on the right-hand side of the road as you drive into town. It also sells fuel. It is open Monday to Saturday 08:00 to 19:30, and on Sunday morning 08:30 to 12:30. https://www.carrefour.fr/magasin/market-chamonix-mont-blanc
Sherpa, Chamonix– open until 08:00 to 20:00 every day (check hours, as during off season it closes some days). Not huge, but conveniently located near the Chamonix train station in case you have forgotten something you need. https://www.sherpa.net/magasins/chamonix

Carrefour, Sallanches – A ‘hypermarket’ – it literally is huge, and sells almost everything from groceries to clothes, home-wares and entertainment. Open Monday to Saturday until 20:30, closed Sundays. https://www.carrefour.fr/magasin/sallanches
